Twitch Explainer For Bluesky Users

Understandably a great many people think Twitch is defined by the top 0.1% of channels who draw in 10's of 1000's each broadcast but in truth its a platform with 14+ million (approx. 7 million active) channels, each with an average of 3 or 4 viewers. There is a vast amount of devil in the following details.

  • Almost all big channels draw in viewers from other platforms such as twitter or youtube
  • Videogames are the oil keeping engine running but the "Just Chatting" section is the fuel
  • Despite chatting being the main thing people do, studiously avoiding politics or "both sides-ing" everything including conflicts or even agreed history is the norm
  • At any given moment there are more people watching mundane stuff (like youtube or tv shows) than there are playing games
  • Copyright/licensing issues are almost non-existent and largely unpoliced
  • Channels with over 50 viewers who've grown organically within the confines of twitch are extraordinarily rare and almost always focused on a single game
  • Most channels under 50 viewers are populated by audiences comprised of other streamers, or ex-streamers, with a great many engaged in a pyrrhic game of "I'll scratch your back if you scratch mine" (a game where the only real winner is Amazon as it takes most of the subscription money)
  • Vast swathes of these smaller channels, which twitch call the "torso", voluntarily attempt to conform to the kind of standards you'd expect of a kids tv show
  • There are no more than a few dozen notable political commentary channels, all but one of which are right-leaning
